Why We Roast: The Story Behind Life Light Coffee

For those of you who have been around for a while, you’ve seen the transformation of this little coffee roasting company over the years. What began as a venture into the unknown world of coffee roasting grew into a desire to fund mission trips, then became a passion for spreading the gospel in India—specifically by supporting a ministry in one of the most unreached areas of the country.

A village church in India—one of many gospel-centered gatherings your coffee helps support. Faces are blurred for security.

We started out as The Mission Cup, then became Mission Cup, then Mission Cup Coffee, and today, we are Life Light Coffee Roasting.

So why the most recent name change?

The ministry we support is called Life Light Ministries. After nearly five years of partnership, we wanted our name to better reflect that connection—and more importantly, to clearly communicate why we do what we do.

This coffee roasting business exists for one purpose: to support the work of Pastor Girish, his family, and their gospel-centered ministry.

Where does “Life Light” come from?

The Gospel of John—specifically John 1:1–5:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Pastor Girish chose the name Life Light because he has spent over 20 years bringing the light of the gospel—life—to those walking in spiritual darkness.

Over the past five years, we’ve been encouraged, challenged, and humbled watching this ministry grow. Their faithfulness, perseverance, and dedication to the Lord through every trial have both convicted and inspired us.

Every bean we roast and every bag of coffee we sell is our way of participating in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18–20). We’re deeply grateful for the opportunity the Lord has given us to partner with Pastor Girish and his ministry.

Only by God’s grace and providence could a woman roasting coffee in her Iowa basement be connected to a gospel-centered ministry on the other side of the globe.

How humbling is that?
